Blog Post #3
Welcome back! The weather this week has been beautiful, so that has definitely been conducive to my work. So, yay! Anyway, here’s a story--again, it’s a pretty small thing. As I’m sure it is with some of you, parallel parking is a somewhat intimidating endeavor to undertake. It is for me, at least. However, I did find success--albeit after probably ten back-and-forths...so I would not necessarily give myself a high score on it, but it was functional. What was kind of amusing about this also was that there was this dad and his kid getting stuff from their car (which was parked directly in front of the spot I was trying to park in) while I was struggling to properly maneuver. The judgmental eyes of a child watching you parallel park are a pretty good incentive to succeed haha. After that adventure though, I had forgotten to pay for my parking at one of the meters, so I had to turn around (I had kind of booked it away from the scene of the crime...well, kind of) and walk all the way back. All in all, it was a pretty eventful start to my day!
Okay, so an update on what I’ve learned. So this first point isn’t exactly a new concept, but it was one I put in words just the other day. For photography--a picture of a striking flower is not the same as a striking picture of a flower. It’s all about context and lighting and all of that good stuff. Also, drawing in person at the site is quite different from using a reference photo, or at least, that has been my experience. I feel like using a reference photo off-site is more about accuracy or re-creation. On-site, it’s about the feeling more, or just capturing an idea.
I think I still am just working towards achieving my goals. I’ve kept creating pieces to assemble into a portfolio/chapbook (I’ll probably begin putting work together early next week). I’ve also experimented more with pens, which was fun and not something I am most comfortable with. And, I’ve been writing more poetry, so we’ll see how the balance between writing and visual art turns out in my final product. Like last time, I’m still working on developing/discovering my own personal style and will continue that journey :)
For questions, I again don’t have anything super pressing. Something I’m thinking about, though, is what the theme of my final collection will be. Am I going to go for just a general nature concept or something more specific, like a narrative I’m trying to tell? Also, I’m wondering if I want to do any people drawings/photos/etc as I go along. What do y’all think?
Thank you for reading and see you next week! (Final week already??? Crazy!)

Hi Thea, it's Brett again. Thank you for another intriguing reflection, and for the funny self-deprecating story. Unfortunately, even with all of my experience at the wheel of a motor vehicle, I can relate to the parking difficulty (& the occasional harsh judgment of an onlooker). As someone without training as a photographer, I find your insider's description of your process, and the distinctions you are drawing here, to be particularly interesting. I'm impressed by the way you can create a composition that transforms the subject, so that the flower becomes a landscape or like a castle, etc. With the poetry, do you plan to pair what you're writing with the visual art? Thank you again for sharing your storytelling and artwork, and wishing you an enjoyable final week of your project.
ReplyDeleteHi Brett, thank you for commenting!! Yes, I often do pair my poetry with my visual art--if not with a direct subject connection, typically through thematic or just similar feelings. I like to try to build a story, or layers of interpretation in my work, so I'm glad that's coming through clearly :))
DeleteThose photos are stunning! Great job with the lighting and the colors are so vibrant!
ReplyDeleteThank you Becky!! I'm glad you like them! Also, it was good seeing you the other day--we must like visiting the same places :)

ReplyDeleteViolet says: "I also agree that it's pretty. I like the pictures and I like the ladybug."
Olivia says: "I'm happy that you could finally get into that parking spot. Sorry that kids are watching you that's always embarrassing."
Max says: "Good job. Photos looking great!"
Keola says: "I really like the art. I also find parallel parking extremely difficult."
Naveen says: "I really like the ladybug photo."
Evan says: "Good job parking."
Jeffrey says: "I'm here today so I can actually say something! ... ... ... ..."
Kenny says: "Wow! 4 comes after 3. Who knew?!? I also forgive you for not taking my recommendation and going up to The Garden of the Bishops Close in Elk Rock. But you should do so this week. Seriously."
Love,
Your C&C
Hey all, thank you again for your comments! I appreciate y'all. Kenny, I still have not managed to forge a trip out to Elk Rock.......but it is on my list! (Even if it doesn't quite make it into this time frame :)) See you all next week!
